Strikes and lock-outs are central to the history of industrial struggle in Australia. From the 1856 stop-work by stone-masons which led to the first industrial eight-hour working day to recent struggles such as the MUA / Patrick dispute of 1998, strikes have been a central weapon in the industrial struggle undertaken by Australian radicals, as have been lock-outs by those the radicals confront.
