Details

Communism as a doctrine has its origins in Marx and Engel's Communist Manifesto of 1848. Communism as a political practice emerged out of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Communist Party of Australia was formed soon after. Communism provided an all-emcompassing theory and practice, applying a class analysis to all elements of human life. It also provide a way of life, inspiring the art, literature and cultural life of its adherents. It provoked fear, outrage and persecution from conservatives.

Beverley Symons Communism in Australia, A Resource Bibliography (1994) and the subsequent supplement is a comprehensive guide to the full literature on the topic. Stuart Macintyre The Reds (1998) is the first of a two volume history of Australian communism.
