Details
Harry Holland was a socialist, labour organiser and politican in Australia and New Zealand.
Active in the Australian Socialist League in Sydney from 1892, he rejected his roots in the Salvation Army and espoused militant socialism. He was critical of the direction of the new Labor Party, from which he broke in 1898.
He was involved with the Australian Workman and the Socialist. He was jailed in 1896 for a libel conviction.
He unsucessfully ran for Parliament with the Socialist Labor Party in 1901, and also organised the Tailoresses' Union of New South Wales in their strike of November that year. For the next ten years he was involved in various socialist publications and causes. In 1909 Holland was convicted of sedition for his role in the Broken Hill Strike.
In 1912 he made a lecture tour of New Zealand, where he wrote an account of the Waihi miners strike. He accepted the editorship of the Maoriland Worker. He had been involved in the 1913 strike agitation and was imprisioned again for three months in 1913 for the use of seditious language. In 1916 he helped form the New Zealand Labour Party, was elected to Parliament in 1918 and occupied the Chairmanship of that party until his death in 1933.
