The International Socialists emerged in 1975 out of a tendency formed in 1971 as the Marxist Workers Group and known after 1972 as the Socialist Workers Action Group., The group identified with a neo-Trotskyist analysis hostile to Australian nationalism and identifying the Soviet Union as a class society. By the 1980s, it identified explicitly with the International Socialist Tendency formed by the Socialist Workers Party (UK). A split in 1985 produced Socialist Action. The two groups reunified in 1990 as the International Socialist Organisation.
