From the Draft Statement published in Broad Left Conference Bulletin No 1:
Pressing issues of current concern strongly suggest that broad left and socialist forces should come together in an open atmosphere to discuss perspectives for the left in Australia. We believe it is both desirable and timely for those broad left forces who share similar perspectives to discuss how to develop more effect left responses to current poltical developments in Australia and to the vital issues of the 1980s and 1990s.
