Abstract

This article presents the manifesto of the Australian Women's Peace Army during the campaign before the 1916 referendum on conscription. It is labelled a special appeal by Women to Women. It establishes the debate around conscription as one of might versus right, linking to causes of the war to the operations of capitalism and imperialism. It also adopts the position that women have a greater responsibility than men in opposing conscription. As 'mothers of the race' women have to conserve life love and beauty, all of which are destroyed by war.
It was published alongside a Open Letter of Members of the Commonwealth Parliament from Vida Goldstein.
