Abstract

The struggle against conscription during the Vietnam War escalated following the jailing of postal worker John Zarb as a draft resister in 1968. Organisations like Save Our Sons began a campaign to distribute anti-conscription leaflets in the streets of Melbourne. This led to some arrests in 1969 and a subsequent and successful campaign to repeal Melbourne City Council By-law 418 under which the arrests were made. CPA (M-L) Chairman Ted Hill sought to discuss some of the larger issues behind concepts like "democracy" in this brief pamphlet.
